ARTIST STATEMENT
The widespread practice of ornamenting surfaces, objects and bodies attests to the fundamental human drive to create and experience visual pleasure, just as playing and watching sport fulfills our desire for the physical. Erik Krebs-Schade has been investigating the ability of ornamentation and painting acting as a carrier of meaning, and the relationship of sport to personal and cultural identity, as well as ways in which physical motion and ornamental structures and forms may activate an installation space. He examines the role of ornamentation in a subliminal social language that may imply status and wealth or allude to personal identity and desire.
Portraiture is a re-current theme. The work illustrates the elements of the external figure, line, surface, decoration, and space. It includes movement, change, contrast and ambiguity, thus further developing an interest in composition and gender. References include ancient Khmer carvings, baroque ornament found in Artist like Tiepolo, contemporary linear illustration, and popular sports action photography – particularly football.
